Dandruff Vs. Dry Scalp

Ever worn a dark-colored shirt and noticed, in the middle of the day, little white flakes on your shoulders? This is usually followed by a mini
omg-is-this-dandruff freak out complete with covert brushing off the flakes while hoping no one noticed it before you did.  The good thing is, dandruff is generally more distinctive than the regular old dry scalp.  Here are the differences.

What They Are

Dandruff: not caused by dryness, but rather too much oil (sebum).
Most often to do harmless yeast which feeds on the excess oil and dead skin cells on the scalp, causing skin cells to shed more frequently and clump into flakes.
Dry Scalp: due to loss of moisture from the skin. Causes include cold weather, product build up, hard water and diet.

Signs & Symptoms

Dandruff: greasy and yellowish white in color. Flakes are larger than dry scalp flakes and are harder to detach from the scalp. You will experience itching and may have scalp odor.
